Gang Awareness

About

We are committed to the prevention of criminal street gangs in our community. The Police Department has recognized that a real need exists within the law enforcement community to learn, train and upgrade methods for dealing with gangs. There is also a serious need in our community to develop methods focusing on prevention. Gangs are being pushed out of localities that are addressing gang problems effectively. Smaller communities must continue to proactively combat gangs in order to prevent them from moving to our community.

Gang Investigations

The Department has a full-time gang investigator who collaborates with school resource officers, investigators, and patrol officers within the department on the identification, prevention, intervention and suppression of gang activity. Department personnel collaborate with education administrators, correctional facility administrators, local counselors, Social Services, Probation and Parole and other organizations and departments in order to address the gang problem.

Federal Gang Task Force

Furthermore, the Department has collaborated with other peninsula law enforcement agencies by joining the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Safe Streets Peninsula Task Force. This task force is sponsored by the FBI and includes the Virginia State Police, Newport News Police, Hampton Police and Homeland Security Investigations. The task force focuses on the investigating and dismantling of violent organized criminal street gangs operating on the peninsula.
