Pocahontas Trail Corridor Study

About

This study examined the Pocahontas Trail corridor between Fire Station 2 and James River Elementary School. It engaged the community to identify key transportation needs and define a vision for the future of the corridor. The study identified feasible transportation improvements for all users to include motorists, transit users, pedestrians and bicyclists. The recommended improvements were to match the surrounding character of the Pocahontas Trail corridor and address the community’s needs while enhancing quality of life for area residents and users of the corridor. The Study Team developed concept sketches and cost estimates and recommended strategies to prioritize improvements along the corridor after collecting public input.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee was comprised of representatives from the neighborhoods, churches and businesses along the corridor who volunteered to advise the County and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) during this study. The group met six times from the start of the study. View meeting materials and summaries.

Technical Committee

Also assisting the County and VDOT during this process was a Technical Committee comprised of representatives from the Police and Fire Departments, Parks & Recreation, Williamsburg-James City County Schools, Social Services, VDOT, Stormwater & Resource Protection, James City Service Authority (JCSA), Planning and Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA).

Additional Outreach

Additional outreach was conducted with other local groups in the community to gain additional feedback from the community. Members of the project team conducted a presentation at James River Elementary School on Dec. 12, 2017 and at Colonial Manor on Dec. 19, 2017.

Schedule

Three public workshops were held in November 2017, January 2018 and April 2018, and extensive coordination with the Steering and Technical Advisory Committees occurred. A summary report documenting the study results and the recommendations developed based on the community engagement efforts were presented to the Planning Commission on June 6, 2018 and the Board of Supervisors on June 10, 2018. These recommendations were fully adopted by the Board, and the project is actively seeking funding for the ongoing construction of the recommended improvements.
